Richard Ashton

LL.B (Hons) The Association of Lifetime Lawyers, Solicitor, Director

Having been brought up in and around the law, as my father is a solicitor, it was natural that I would join the solicitors’ profession. I studied at Aberystwyth University and following qualification in 1997 my first position was in the respected Shrewsbury firm Moss & Poulson. I quickly developed a passion for helping people with Wills, estate administration powers of attorney and tax and became a member of Solicitors for the Elderly. Having spent time in a National firm as head of trusts & estates I decided to establish my own specialist firm, using the experience gained in over 25 years in the law.

I deal with all aspects of estate administration, Will preparation, Trusts and advice on powers of attorney and other later life issues. My aim to be thorough and pragmatic but always approachable, putting the needs of my clients at the centre of everything I do. I thoroughly enjoy meeting and helping people and being able to do so, at what is often a difficult time in their lives, is both a privilege and hugely rewarding.

I am grateful for the many referrals I receive from existing clients and local professionals who are kind enough to place their confidence in me and seek to develop client for life relationships wherever possible. I am extremely fortunate to lead a talented and experienced team, committed to excellence and client service and look forward to continuing to help the people of Shropshire and beyond.

Karen Broster

Karen Broster

Consultant Senior probate executive

My career into the realms of Trusts and Estates began when I spent 8 years with Barclays Bank Trust Co Ltd in Liverpool and by the time I left to start a family I had studied for the Institute of Banking Trusts & Estates Diploma and gained considerable experience in the administration of Trusts & Estates and associated tax work. I also assisted the Littlewoods Pools Winners Liaison Office in advising winners on Tax Planning and Investments, which was both interesting and exciting, although I never met Viv Nicholson of Spend Spend Spend fame!

Some 4 years later we had relocated to Shropshire and I was offered a position with the longstanding Shrewsbury firm, Garrard Mitchell, which merged with Sprott Stokes and Turnbull and became Turnbull Garrard. Over the years I have worked with many clients, completing their wills, LPA’s and offered them Tax Advice and sadly their estates, and now advise their children and even grandchildren.

I have worked on complex estates both on intestacy and where there is a valid will, being involved in all aspects of tax; including Heritage Relief Claims, Agricultural Relief and Business Relief for IHT and Income Tax and Capital Gains Tax.

I pride myself on being compassionate, patient and understanding in the difficult and upsetting circumstances clients find themselves in on the death of a family member or friend. Evidenced by the fact that many return as clients. I am now a Consultant with the experienced team at Ashton & Co, with whom I have worked with for many years, and offer an expert and personalised service to all my clients.

Away from the office I enjoy spending time with my family and dog Skye and in my spare time like walking and taking holidays.

BSc (Hons) Practice & Accounts Manager

Having completed a Business Degree in 2001 I worked for a National Equestrian Construction business in Shropshire, gaining valuable business experience. Due to their relocation in 2007 and my desire to stay in Shrewsbury, I was offered the position of Legal Cashier at Turnbull Garrard and was quickly promoted to Head Cashier, supporting all the Lawyers with the SRA accounts, VAT and Payroll. In 2012 we were acquired by a National Firm and over the years I received various promotions and became Revenue and Accounts Manager, specialising in the Trusts and Estates area of Law, of a successful multimillion pound national department.

In February 2023 there was an opportunity to join Ashton & Co Solicitors as Practice and Accounts Manager, working alongside and supporting a local team whom I have worked with for over 10 years.

I have raised over £45,000 for a charity close to my heart, Breast Cancer Campaign, by climbing Mount Kilimanjaro and running the London Marathon, which resulted in being invited to a presentation at the House of Lords.

Outside of work I enjoy spending time with my partner, family and friends and my two Jack Russell’s.

I began my legal career in July 2005 as a Legal Secretary at Moss and Poulson Solicitors before becoming a Paralegal in May 2011 and working for a national firm. In February 2023 an exciting opportunity arose for me to become part of Ashton & Co Solicitors and I am proud to be part of such an established team of lawyers specialising in private client matters with over 80 years of expertise between us.

Penny Ashcroft

Penny Ashcroft

Paralegal

My career in the law started in 2014 when I joined Linder Myers Solicitors as an Administration Apprentice and then Legal Assistant in the busy Trusts & Estates department. In June 2021, I graduated from Manchester Metropolitan University with a First Class Law Degree which I achieved whilst working full time in the Trusts and Estates department. Combining work and study was challenging but enabled me to gain valuable experience in Trusts and Estates and benefit from the expertise and mentorship of my experienced colleagues.

I joined Ashton & Co Solicitors with the rest of the team in February 2023. I manage my own caseload of Wills and Lasting Powers of Attorney and also work alongside senior colleagues to assist with the administration of estates and trust work. Having recently passed my final CILEX exam, I am now commencing my final phase of required training which will see me qualify as a Chartered Legal Executive towards the end of 2024.

In common with my colleagues at Ashton & Co I find helping clients through what are often difficult times very rewarding. I feel that good advice delivered in a supportive, caring approachable manner can make a real difference.
